Default wanted 5x4 Field camera

I'm looking for something to go hiking with

5x4 body only, preferably with a lens plate or two

What have you?

Wood is good but lightness the aim.

I have a sinar rail system and have hiked to 1100m elevation with it, but it's a mission and would rather a more leisurely walk...

Have a look at the Intrepid cameras - very light and affordable new. I have one and are very pleased with it (for the money). . Not so pretty as some of the more expensives but very good value and does the job.

Neil.

Thanks Neil. An intrepid would work but they have a 6-8 week lead time and I need it for an intense 3 week period of use, 3rd-24th April.

That is pretty last minute. Ffordes have a Wista at the moment, plus boards and lenses.and all of the other paraphernalia. You could be set up immediately for not so much, depending on your budget.

If you want to go ulta light-weight with 5x4 consider a 5x4 pinhole camera. Not too expensive new and the 5x4 pinhole image can be quite special. I use a 5x4 ONDU pinhole camera from time to time and have been very pleased with the images that I've made with it.

Lightness?
What about this pretty german 9x12cm Plate cameras.
Tiny, relatively lightweight of some 100 gramms (especially the ones with wooden body), thin metal single filmholders.
And mostly cheap.

They neither have tilt nor swing or shift, but rising up and down is possible.
I really love them for going out with a small handbag only.

Typically I stick everything in a west or jacket :-)

Normally they are not designed for changing lenses, but this is possible (with missing some fun in doing this).
A nice set could be one of these tiny ancient Angulons 90mm ( attention please, my 75mm Grandagon get stressed with the floor and I never used an Angulon 90mm on this cameras) and the standard 150mm lens which came as Xenar, Tessar, Heliar, Eurynar and so on..

I added a Plaubel springback 9x12cm to my camera body; this could be done with an international 4x5" back, too.

Easy to carry, easy to use - what can I say more..

Edith:
The onboard lenses have 135mm, not 150mm.

Of course these MPP are good, but I don't know about the weight.
On the other hand they seem to be rigid enough to survive an accident during freeclimbing.

Missing a zero off the weight, a typical German pre-WWII German metal 9x12 plate camera is around 1.2 Kg. If you want lighter and smaller then a 9x12 KW Patent Etui weighs 815gms.

An MPP Micro Technical MkVII weighs 3.2 Kg, without a range finder, but with a lens.

Yes, my Zeiss metal body is more heavy than my 'noname' wooden bodies.
And the Patent Etui is a tiny pocket wonder of course.

An MPP with 3,2Kg is a lot of stuff for hiking, thanks for this information.
Years ago I felt very comfortable with my Shen Hao HZX 45 - a very fast camera of about 2,4Kg which, concerning movements, missed nearly nothing compared to a mono rail system.

It's always about what we want to do with our tools.
That's the reason to me choosing this 9x12cm Plattenkameras if I want to feel free instead of overloaded.
