Default Alternative lamps for Ve Vere enlargers 504/507/5108

These enlargers use ELH 120v 300w lamps with an approx lifespan of 35 hours, these are expensive here in the UK. It is possible to use ENH 120v 250w lamps instead, they have an expected life span of 175 hours, 5 time longer which is very significant, they are also more readily available here in the UK.

My De Vere 5108 uses 4 ELH lamps to give an output of 1200w, they are wired as pairs in series, so if one lamp fails the other in the series is not functioning. I have noticed with 5x4 negatives there are no issues with just two working lamps. So using 4 ENG 250w lamps is reducing overall output to 1000w not particularly significant in terms of exposures, but very significant in terms of long term economy, both in terms of lower (1/3 to 1/2) cost per lamp and 5 time the potential lamp life.

Hi Ian, I know it's a long shot as these are meagre 150w lamps, but would they be of any use to you?

Sorry Ian, I see now that they need halogen lamps!

The main issue is De Vere colour heads use 120 volt halogen lamps, a non-standard voltage in the UK/Europe. Then because of their 300 wattage and relatively short lifespan they aren't widely used for other applications.

Anyway, the 250w 120v ENH can be found for around £6 each, compared to around £18 each for the 300w 120v ELH, so with 5x the expected lifespan and 1/3 the price that's 1/15 the running costs plus a slight saving in electricity as well.

An enlarger that needs 1200 watts of illumination?!?!?

Wow!! That really must give a bright image on the baseboard, but isn't there a worry about melting negatives with such a load, or are the lamps relatively cool in temperature?

Oh, and this link might be of use and answer your question Ian:

I posted in that thread Terry.

The last time I bought ELN 120v 300w lamps I paid £3 each but I bought 60 to get that discount, at that time they were £10-£12 from photo dealers. Now they are around £16.50 - £18 each.

Ian,

I have used these lamps with my Devere 504 and 203 (with Ilf MG Heads) and found the slight fall-off in light not to be a problem. In fact, for me, the MG heads can be a tad too bright with the normal lamps fitted when making smaller prints.

I have a stash !

Neil.

I had a Varicon 504, bench model with filter drawer, for some years and found that with regular incandescent lamps there was a severe fall off of illumination towards the corner of the projected image, measured as a full stop.
I later painted the interior surface of the lamphouse with heat resisting white (it was originally black), put in a low energy 32w (150w equivalent) daylight lamp and a thin sheet of diffusing material (disposable plastic chopping board from Poundland) in the filter drawer. Worked a treat.
