Camera Bag Clear-Out
Having just gained an addition lens as well as a very versatile lens shade for my LF collection, I needed to find a space in the already pretty fully camera bag.
So, I took everything out of the camera bag, probably the first time in about 8 years. I was surprised by just how much stuff was in there and how much detritus I had accumulated. I also reviewed the filters I always carry and demoted to the back-up bag those needless duplicates as well as colours I rarely, if ever, use. The net result is a slightly lighter main bag. I'm not sure it is any less crowded - there are a couple of things I carry which are probably no longer required but I'm just not ready to retire them just yet. So, it made me wonder, am I so unusual, in slowly collecting "stuff" in my bag, or are people pretty ruthless in their thrifting ? Thanks Martin |

I keep my camera bags empty ,and all my cameras and lenses and all the other camera stuff I keep in a glass cabinet in the living room ,and I take what I want to shoot with from the cabinet and when finished with them I put them back ,this way I get to use all my camera gear ,and I have tons of camera gear :-)

So I pack my bag, or bags, fresh each day now. Even so it is suprising what extras I often find in the bag when I get home at the end of the day. The odd sock, someone else's hat (I'll give it you back next week Tony ) an assortment of twigs, bits of bracken. And even the odd grouse dropping... Alan |

I too leave my bags empty and organise myself anew for each photographical foray. I keep inheriting as well as buying "new" equipment so it's a good thing I do or I'd be weighed down!

I only keep one camera bag fill, that is my Etr outfit, I have 2 other camera bags which I keep empty, all of my equipment is on a table in my den, and I decide on the day which camera I will use, depending on my mood or what I am likely to photograph, then either grab the camera,(If it is my rolleis or one of my folders or other fixed lens cameras I just need the camera, exposure meter, a few films, lens hood and filters) or one of my interchangeable lens rangefinders then I pack a small bag. when I return home I put the cameras Etc back on the table

I keep my main camera bag packed and ready to go, I've done this for 30 years. It's largely the same large format kit as was in the late 1980's although it's a different spotmeter now and I added an extra lens, but as I no longer take a 6x9 RF back or my Leica it's no heavier, still the same filters etc. The major change is it's no longer a regular backpack rather a specialist photo-backpack
If I want to I'll lighten the load before leaving, taking out lenses I think I won't use. I have a separate camera bag for my Mamiya 645 kit but that only gets used for portraits and model work. Ian |

I have bags packed up for specific kits and as much as possible leave them packed, just with occaisional tweaking, swapping a lens or whatever. I wouldn't change this way of working, means you can just pick up a bag, know that it's got everything in you need and go. On occasions where I have packed a bag on an ad-hoc basis it seems like I'm guaranteed to forget something. Plus if I'm getting up blearly eyed for a sunrise I don't want to be scrabbling around trying to compile a kit together. Preparation is everything!

I keep my formats in different bags ready to go then have a bag for filters etc that cover those formats and take from it what I need at the time, this seems to work well for me. I've also recently reorganised my LF kit as it had become to heavy to carry so rationalised it to one lens and the bare essentials everything else is in a back up bag which stays in the car and I decide what else I need before I start walking.

I must add that I always carry a camera over my shoulder when I go out ,as my wife says you an,t taking that with you again.I also have in doors at lest two cameras with film in ready for that photo opportunity that will make me millions of pounds .I love film cameras a I have loads as well as lenses and allsorts of attachments .as I write this I have my Nikon F3P by my side with motor drive and 105mm 2.5 Nikkor lens fitted, it is a most beautiful camera and one of my favourites ,I have added a lump of pig iron to the bottom its a AH3 and is good for keep fit .

I keep each format in its own bag. All the gubbins like filters, light meter, cleaning kit etc are kept in a photo vest. A regular clear out of the vest keeps things simple.
