Zenza Bronica S2 purchase
Hi,
I felt in the trap and bought a secondhand Bronica S2. Happy and unhappy is my feeling. 75 lens sticks and need to be cleaned. 5 cm is fine and two film backs are useful

I would of had an S2 if I did not have the SQ. The Nikon lenses are what caught my interest in the bronica system in the first place. It is also known as the Japanese Hasselblad. Nice camera.

Bronica S2
I have never fancied one. I was in a club years and years ago and there were a few members (The better off ones) had them but my outstanding memory of them was the noise the focal plane shutter and the vibration from the mirror operating was enough almost to register on the Richter scale!
I did have use of the successor the EC-TL which was a totally different beast and yes the lenses were terrific with S series fitting the later camera as well |

they say its not the camera that takes the photo ,that always makes me smile and if we only had one camera we would still produce our masterpieces ,but life is not like that ,I love cameras as well as the prosses of making the final print ,but I love using cameras all deferent types and makes its like a drug that I need a shot of every now and then .When I was young I could not afford much and now I am old and the camera prices are a fraction of the price they were new I can indulge my habit a little now and then ,I have been mucking about with my newly purchased Rollei and its keeping me happy ,and in theses strange times that's all I can hope for .

this could be me who said it, thanks.
I'm on a project and didn't want the crispy sharp rendering from my Hasselblad or Rollei so I jumped into the game with such an old camera and lens system. The nikkors are hopefully sharp enough and not that crispy. Images in the web shows this and having some experience with the Mamiya C330 showed me what's possible with older lenses. I got that old lady with two film backs and two lenses, 75mm and 50mm, a box full with stuff and filters. But the seller didn't tell me the 75mm lens doesn't work correctly, ok it's a nearly 60year old master piece and not quite new. I decided to let it be fixed in a nearby camera workshop and spend another 200 € for this.

Hi Martin, I thought about getting some early Hasselblad lenses for this very reason. I presume they must be of a similar age but I don't know about their rendering.
Had you considered this option?

Good Morning Martin.
I believe we sometimes think old lenses are 'less sharp' or 'more atmospheric' because we look at old photographs, often in reproduction, and see what are actually quite degraded versions of the original. The optical engineers who made your Bronica would certainly have been trying their very best to make sharp, accurate lenses with good geometry. Modern multi-coating makes a huge difference shooting into the light, where flare reduces contrast and apparent sharpness. You might just find you new Bronica to be sharper than you want. Medium format is very forgiving, unless you print very big. If a less sharp, less 'clinical' rendering is what you need for this project you may need to even look at something much older and far simpler. I used to shoot vintage folding cameras sometimes, and I have to say even they will produce sharp images at smaller apertures. Good luck. |
