Hello! Wondering if anyone could kindly help me

Hi there.
My in-laws have just downsized and whilst helping clear out their loft we found a lot of old film reels and equipment, which I know zero about. It may even have belonged to the generation before, so pretty old stuff.

I was hoping to explore the best way to view the content before destroying it.... perhaps even digitizing it thereafter....

Would anyone here be able to offer any help or advice please? I can take some photos of the stuff if that would be of help. Based in Surrey, UK.

Photo's will help but please bear in mind you will need to make 4-5 posts before photo's become visible to forum members. A security measure.

Until you have met the requirements to be able to post photographs you could put the measurements of the reels on here. That way we have a starting point to offer some suggestions.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Perhaps I'll get my post count up a little to allow me to post photos. (This is a genuine enquiry by the way but I totally understand the security reasons).

There's a lot of stuff - will try and lay it all out and photograph it.

It sounds from your original post that you are talking about cine, or movie film. There are people who can clean and restore old film, and make digital copies for ease of viewing. There is also a certain amount of interest in preserving the original material. There was recently, I’m sure a series on TV in Scotland made up of home movie footage. I have dealt with a company called Gauge Film, based in England, for processing cine film, but they also have copying services for old films.
The equipment may have a value, depending on what it is. Some types of cine camera are still sought after.

The other alternative would be to send a list/image(s) of the equipment to a 'friend' using a the PM system or normal Email if that would be a problem and they could post them for you. I would be happy to PM you my Email address if you want to go down that route. You come up as a PM addressee as I have just tried.

Hi,

If it is either Super 8 or Standard 8 cine film there is a little teleconverter that you can buy for home use.

I have used one to convert all my old family films, it does have limitations but depending on time and budget it may be an option.

It does scan the film "frame by frame" which is good. The scanned films can be saved to SD card which then be edited on a laptop / pc in editing software.

However it will only handle up to a 5 inch reel, and the quality (although passable) is I am sure not up to that of a reel digitised by a professional.

Not sure if this helps or hinders.
