Default Fixer at a later stage

Hello all,

I have started using Caffenol for developing. I am storing them in the dark for now as I have no fixer at hand.
My question is, can I use the fixer at a later stage when it arrives to stop the developing or will I just have to keep them in the dark now.

Hi John and welcome to the site.

Someone with more technical knowledge than me might now say otherwise, but I see no reason as to why you can't put a print or two into some fixer solution when it arrives, as long as the prints are kept in total darkness until then.

It's an unusual thing to do to be honest, with it having never crossed my mind before, as I usually do the whole process in one go.

But once fixed and washed, the only way you are going to prove it to yourself that it has worked, is to take one print out into the daylight. Only then will you find your answer, but as I said, I personally can't see why it all shouldn't be fine.

Thanks for your reply and help Terry.
I am new to the developing side and thought the lemon juice in water was what fixed it but I soon realised that part had nothing to do with the paper negative being stopped from exposure.
If I am right I think the lemon juice is to stop the developing.
I may have it all wrong though LOL but I'm enjoying it, even with the failed attempts. Looking forward to more developing

The second bath, called the stop bath, can be either citric acid, which is smell free, or acetic acid, which smells and is simply to stop and neutrilize the developer prior to fixing, I would suspect that the prints will detorite if not fixed straight away, I would hold of on any developing until your fixer arrives, the latent image will store better than the developed/stopped image,
Richard

Many thanks for the information Richard.
I shall now wait for the fixer to arrive before I attempt any more.

Unfixed paper will start to turn pink. It will take quit a time for the image to fade from my experience they will not go black.

Hi Jon. You should have a look around at what's on offer by way of developer, stop and fix. Some companies offer odourless stop bath, and, I think, also fixer. Tetenal, in particular, seem to be leaning towards more environmentally friendly chemistry. There are other makers as well who may have suitable products. If you look at the forum sponsors, that would be a good place to start. My Darkroom is probably a bit bigger than your current space, but has limited ventilation, so I can understand why your looking for less toxic chemicals.

Hi Mitch.
I've noticed the pink tinge on most of them, now I know why. Cheers

Fotospeed and Tetenal, (who, I believe make Fotospeed chemistry) both offer odourless stop and fixer, and are widely available, should be able to get them from the forum sponsors, There is a film developer based on citric acid, Kodak's Xtol, as far as paper developers go, they are pretty much all based around standard chemistry, I can't off hand think of any that are based on anything like citric acid, but in the amounts and dilutions we used they are not really a problem,
