Gareth, now you are asking something, we all have our favorites, personally I love Fomapan 400, developed in either Rodinal/RO9 one shot, in both 120 and 35mm, it is all I use, and is a great price from Silverprint, but others will disagree with me, others may agree,
Richard

Hi Gareth. You've been given very good advice already. As far a film is concerned then given the light conditions for the next 5-6 months most of the time I'd certainly go for 400 film.

TMax 400 is probably the least grainy 400 film in the marketplace and the negs in Xtol look good to me but there is a lot to be said for the standard film and developer combo that most, maybe all beginners college courses advise which is the good old Ilford HP5+ and ID11 developer

Whatever you choose enjoy the experience

Mike

Hi so tmax 400 seems to be really cheap at £1.50 per roll this right because some of the black and white films I have seen are around £5

Wow! Where have you found TMax400 at £1.50 per roll, Gareth? The best price I have found is close to £4 per roll for 120 film and a 135 X 36 frame film is probably a little more expensive than this.

I just googled tmax 400 and it's on amazon with £5 shipping if you buy enough though it's pretty cheap.

I presume it's kodak (since that's what I found)

Gareth this price is like the Curate's Egg - good in parts. The prices of all three seller are great but two out of the three only have 1 or 2 films to sell so the postage costs wipe out any benefits and the third, namely Mailshots will sell you 8 films but have a look at the postage costs for 8 films I

It is very strange that two out of the three sellers only have 1 or 2 films to sell and the third which is a very large film seller can only sell 8 and the postage is monstrous.

Unfortunately it is a real jungle out there and it appears that the sellers are hoping to get you to buy at what may be a below-cost price(loss leader?) and make it up on postage, hoping you won't notice.

Some e-bayers use the same tactic. The big tiger purrs when it sees you but it may not be friendly and its teeth are still large when it smiles
