Another vote for Microphen. I’ve used it with HP5 at 800 and didn’t notice any lack of shadow detail. I’m now going to be using it with just two films to simplify things - Delta 100 at box speed for good light and Delta 400 at 800 so I can shoot handheld in the dull weather I like. Microphen is my 'go to' developer for HP5+. I really like it rated at 800 and developed in Microphen 1+1 for 16 minutes at 20 DegC.

Microphen is actually a very good general use fine-grain film developer for normally exposed films too. It is clean working and grain compares well with D-76/ID-11 being only slightly more noticeable. You probably wont see any difference with medium or large format. If Ilford sold it in 5 litre size, I wouldn't have any qualms with using Microphen as my regular film developer. I currently use either ID-11 or D-76, which ever is cheapest at the time of purchase.
