Arrived safely on the 19th thank you Frank!

A lovely print of a large piece of driftwood on a shingle beach, just the type of subject I enjoy finding and photographing so an inspired choice Frank - thank you. Thanks also for the note you included which was a lovely personal touch. A fabulous addition to my collection.

Regards

Lovely print arrived today taken in an Italian flea market. I would be interested to see how it looks with a light sepia tone.

Thanks

And received this morning, Alex (Royal Mail did good, as they say).

A street shot taken, I understand, in Glasgow using a remote release on a Nikon f100. Taken on Tri-X. The shot captures the back of two blokes walking in front of you and gets the faces of two ladies walking towards you, on with side of the lads. Their expressions are quite serious - perhaps to be expected on a winter’s day on Argyll St Nicely printed - dark & moody, you can really get a sense it was a cold, dreich day.

Either the camera wasn’t level or you cropped it that way in the darkroom - either way the slight tilt works very well, I think - contributes to the dynamic nature of the scene.

Question: were you holding the camera level/still with one hand while operating the remote release with the other? I’m assuming it’s a physical remote release and not a wireless one (if such a thing exists for the f100).

Good work, Alex - many thanks for sending it to me.
Michael

Thanks Michael, I’m glad you liked the print. I had the camera on a strap around my neck, which accounts for the angle. There are two possible ways of firing it remotely. The first is the original Nikon electronic cable release which I have used threaded inside a jacket sleeve. I think that’s what I was doing here. The technique works quite well, but it’s difficult to keep the camera level. The other method I’ve used is a wireless release. These are available from 7 day shop, and similar places. A small box sits on the hot shoe, with a short cable to the socket on the camera. The other bit is a separate box with the release button. If I ever try this again, I will devise some sort of attachment to hold the camera still. Also, it’s best to set manual focus and an aperture that will maximise depth. Aperture priority, or a general manual reading dialled in at the start takes care of exposure. I’m not sure if this approach to photography would be considered a bit sneaky, but it certainly reduces the risk of any altercations.
Alex.

Sounds like a good approach, Alex. People can feel very uncomfortable when they see a camera pointed at them.

On occasion I try to hold a camera in one hand and shoot from the hip but it’s very hit & miss.
