Default Gold and Silver from the Gold Rush

To tie-in with an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, and a new book of the daguerreotypes and tintypes, here's a sample of the photos from the Guardian.

I like the two lads drinking liquor. The one on the left has a broken glass, and a knife! The other has what looks like an early revolver.
Great stuff!
Thanks Nick.

Default Early revolver

It wasn't quite an early revolver but a small callibre piston with several barrels (5 I think) It was nicknamed 'a pepper pot'.

There were what looked like a couple of attempts at hand-colouring which weren't at all bad efforts

It is quite likely that the fancy clothing, booze, gun etc were props. It was common in the early days of photography for the photographer to supply all these things - especially for customers who had little money.

Photography was used to send pictures to distant relatives to show how well you were doing, so dressing for the part and borrowing from the photographer's stash of clothing & props as necessary, seems to have been common.

Their relatives must have been worried! I think you’re right, Bob. The picture has definitely been made in a studio, rather than a 19th Century boozer.
