Default Hello from Swindon

Hey guys,

just saying "good evening" - I'm 32 (male), getting back to all this photography hobby. At the best time doing that, few years ago, I've had an Olympus OM-2n with Zuikos 35mm/2.0, 50mm/1.4 and 85mm/2.0 (the last one I managed to find for 50 quid back then, wish I stumbled upon one for similar money now, my favourite lens ever) plus a medium format Pentacon Six with 85mm/2.8 and a Sonnar 180mm/2.8 (another absolutely beautiful portrait lens, its bokeh has to be seen). I was usually shooting on Ilford HP5+ and FP4+, although did enjoy an occasional slide film or a colour negative. My favourite (and most convenient) way of actually getting the pictures was scanning the films and doing the rest digitally. I think that's what I'd like to do again.

Now I only have an OM-1 with a 50mm/1.4, but I'd like to add all that I listed above again. Plus some nice wide angles for both formats.

That's it for technical stuff, don't really have much photos online to share, although hopefully it will change soon.

Hello

Hi and welcome. The Olympus is a good kit. If you have a room that can be darkened even temporarily then do give darkroom printing a go. You can get trays, chems, safelight and an enlarger quite cheaply. As we are moving into the dark nights period then total darkness isn't necessary once night arrives

There is an "I did this" satisfaction to making a print in a darkroom which scanning cannot match.

Hello and welcome, As mike said above the OM cameras a lovely bits of kit, but it is worth giving darkroom printing a try, tje kit is very cheaply available today, and you get that wow factor that nothing else gives watching that print emerge from a blank piece of paper, there is nothing quite like it.

I know darkroom printing is actually one of my first childhood memories, my dad and his friend had a little darkroom arranged in a basement, just printing family photos taken with their Zenits, Zorkis and Smenas. It was the only affordable way of building up a photo archive in scary eastern Europe in early '80s.
And I'm sure I will try that again, just found that scanning films satisfies me for everyday situations. It's the experience of taking photographs with a mechanical manual camera that get's me excited, later I just want to see the image as soon as it's possible

But sure, you're all right, I am missing out on something fascinating and I need to rectify this mistake

hi Marihino, welcome to FADU. If it's possible to organise I can offer you an old, very basic 35mm condenser enlarger with a decent lens for the cost of shipping. If interested, just send me a PM. The experience of printing as you know is really worth the while. And then, have fun!

Good to see you've joined FADU.
Always fancied a Pentacon Six myself!

peterlg - thank for the offer, it's more the matter of lack of space and possibility of having to move to another city soon. As soon as I get settled a bit, I will certainly think about something like this

MartyNL - it's totally worth it, if only for the Zeiss Jena lenses. The body itself can overlap frames sometimes (it's common), but it can be avoided by winding film carefuly.

Thanks for the warm welcome
