in the early 1980s I assisted with a portrait session of Bill Brandt. The BBC film captures his demeanour exceptionally well. He spent the whole portrait session leaning forward with his arms crossed over his crossed legs, talking very quietly with his strange accent (mixture of German and ‘Posh’ English) but with regular loud bursts of laughter. He also mentioned how relatively easy it was to get people to let him photograph them. He explained that in the 1930s not many people were really doing documentary work amongst working people. At a time when having a professional portrait was way out of most people's league, being asked to sit for a photographer for free was very much interpreted as a compliment. In these day of everyone thrusting their mobiles into every conceivable situation, it is hard to imagine how it was back in the day. Bests, David.

Besides Brandt's voice and demeanour, which are very likeable, the interviewer's voice is memorably grating. Any idea who that was? To his credit, he did manage to get Brand talking about his photos. |

I am stunned that both Brandt and Lartigue said they never looked at their photos or any photos. (e.g. Lartigue: "I am a cook who makes jam but prefers fresh fruit.") I wonder how typical that is among influential photographers? |
