Germany
Apart from my time in Germany with HM Forces where I took a colloquial German course and I mixed with the Germans via my wife's cousin who was a doctor in Munster, but they would always tried to speak in English to improve their own. .
I was particular friends with a German Warrant Officer (Equivalent Rank) who was a specialist in English. It was perfect. He could also put on virtually any common English accent you cared to name with the exception of London. He could never get that quite right. Scouse, Geordie, West Country and Brummy, he was absolutely brilliant with those. He was also responsible for me loosing two days of my life - we went to the Munich beer festival. I think I enjoyed it, I cannot remember. |

Learning GERMAN in British Army !
I was sent to Germany instead of the SUEZ Invasion -- they were going to drop us by parachute to form Number 4 Field Ambulance -- I didn't fancy that -- dangling down with a load of Egyptians shooting at me from below -- but I was down for GERMANY ! So went in 1957 to BMH Munster where I bough a book 'Teach Yourself GERMAN' and would got out into the street and stop an Old Bloke ( still with a Hitler Moustache! ) and say " Guten Tag ! !" and they would jump to attention as i was a BRITISH SOLDIER ( at least NOT a RUSSIAN ! ) and I would ask them the time " wie spate ist es bitte? " and they would keep to attention!
I learnt German camera names -- did a VIDEO all about my time in Germany which you can see here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nf74p4e9H4

I too developed a taste for German wines during my time. Helped by my wife's cousin who worked with a woman who's family owned a Moselle vineyard. It was so, so cheap it would be rude not to join in the party.
Pentaxpete, I too was stationed in Munster based in Winterbourne Kaserne near the Kinderhaus District. I had to have a small operation on my foot at BMH Munster. I was with 4 others having more or less the same op. It was like a conveyor belt, we were only away for about 90 mins or so. I was 2nd in line and after I had been brought back to the ward and recovered from the general anaesthetic the 5th lad was brought back. When he woke up the rest of us convinced him that as he had been away for 24 hours, and we though he had died also it was a day later than he thought. We got into trouble from the ward sister for doing that! Last edited by John King; 16th February 2021 at 06:03 PM. |

I come from nearby Bielefeld, which is not so far from Münster (Umlaut ;-)). All the real music lovers listened only to BFBS radio! :-)
Once my mother almost made an accident with the car while listening to BFBS, because she burst out laughing and couldn't stop. They had a quiz with multiple choice. Who discovered America? 1. Erik the Red 2. Leif Eriksson 3. Vorsikt Starkstrom Guess what was chosen... :-) Frank |

Germany
Judging by your mothers reaction I would say
Vorsikt Starkstrom Which is not a name, and actually means something like 'Precision Electrical Current' Absolutely shocking! |
