Default Ilfotec HC

just started using Ilfotec HC 1x31 dilution and I am really happy with it so far ,nice and contrasty ,and hopefully economical to use as well .I have not made any prints yet ,but will do over the weekend .I shot some x-ray film as well but I haven't developed them yet ,I will have to work out the dilution and development time ,so there is a bit of experimenting in the darkroom and looking forward to that .will let you know how the prints come out .. Is there anybody here on FADU that use HC .....

It's been my go-to for 20 years, Paul: back then I had the same experience as you.

I may be wrong; but I think it was more viscous and harder to mix back then. With Protectan I can make a bottle last almost as long as I like.

It's really good with FP4+ at 1:32. As well as that, developing times with Ilfotec HC can generally be used with HC-110 as well (though I can remember discussion about "European" and "American" HC-110 being different in some way).

I've also used it at the 1+47 dilution for slightly longer developing times, without any issues.

It is a good developer and I used it for years but switched to HC110 which I still use. Going from memory you can use the HC110 dilutions, but do a check before doing so.

I was using dd-x but it was becoming quite expensive and I used it up very fast ,I tried over developers ,but went back to dd-x .but now i have tried HC and I am very pleased with it ,and if I am still happy with the results at the end of the bottle I will make it my go to film developer.

Default Ilford HC

I have never used Ilford HC. In it's concentrated state how long does an open bottle last. I don't have a great B&W through-put, I use more C41 but if it lasts as well as unused stock ID11 I may try it.

If decanted into small(er) bottles it should last ages.

That's no problem, I already do that with RA4 Dev and I have quite few spares that are clean and empty.

The rate of 'going off' by most developers has kept me with ID11 for as long as I remember. I finished of my last 1/2 ltr bottle which was first mixed very nearly 2 years ago!

I always used it 1 to1 with a JOBO which only required 80cc's of dev which was enough for one film. I am now not using the Jobo for B&W so i'm looking around for a replacement for ID11

The first one I used lasted for 22 years opened and not decanted. It got a little darker but was still working to the end.

22years is great. With this record who needs the longevity of HC110?

More seriously given the debate about the effect of "new" HC110 on its longevity and generally higher price in the U.K. it would look as if Ilford HC wins.
