The shocking price of gold toners
I have not bought gold toner for a while but when I visited one of our sponsor's websites I was shocked to find it was £65.23 per litre. Another of our sponsors sells the same toner for £44.00 per litre but this could be old inventory and their next consignment may be more expensive.
At these prices its almost more cost effective importing gold chloride from the US and making my own. When did gold toner get so expensive? I remember paying about £35 per litre when I last bought it. Thank goodness its so stable. |

It's the high cost of Gold now at record highs, that makes the manufacturing costs higher but then that gets exaggerated by the profit margins and then mark ups by distributor/retailer.

At Artcraft Chemicals in the US the price is 45$ US for 1 gram.

Yes I fear that until we finally escape the economic downturn and uncertainty that lies behind the rush to gold and silver we are stuck with high prices for photographic materials containing such elements
So no relief any time soon is my prediction. Pity. I saw a Dave Miller sea shot a couple of years ago that had such a nice cold grey/blue look that I thought was superb Mike |

I rekon there is so little gold in gold toner that you would be far better advised to work out how to make gold chloride. Then go to an antique fair and pick up a few pieces gold jewelry dirt cheap, melt em down and make the stuff yourself. Might be fun doing some real alchemy.

There are a number of relatively simple formulae for gold toner one such formula is GAF231 which is
Distilled water 750ml Ammonium Thiocyanate* 105g Gold Chloride 1%solution 60ml Cold water to make 1000ml * Suitable substitues are Sodium Thiocyanate 110G Potassium Thiocyanate 135g |
