Modernisation:
I don't know quite what other peoples views are on this topic, so here goes!
I think that the forum software is a load of old junk now and we should be actively seeking ways to come up with something more modern. Over to you all for comments |

caveman and it seams ok to me ,I have enough trouble working it out as it is ,if it was souped up it would leave me behind and I would have to go back to hitting dinosaurs on the head with my club .. plus its run well and its free what more could you ask for... www.essexcockney.com |

Alan, can you please explain in more detail in what way is the forum software out of date?

I use the Tapatalk app on my iPhone to view new posts. It has recently been 'modernised' and I have to say I preferred the old version. Alex

A good idea but there is one big problem - who is going to do the work?
I am sure everyone will appreciate there would be months of work and testing to make a good job of this. However, if there is anyone out there, with the required technical knowhow, who is prepared to work long hours for nothing and sacrifice their social life, I am sure our admins would be pleased to hear from them. Neil.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.
I do however think that there are too many sections in forum. J.

And is prepared to pay for an upgrade to the latest version of vBulletin . As I understand it upgrading to a newer version of vBulletin is a non-trivial task.

I think I should point out at this point that this is not happening...
We have looked at other software, and at upgrading this particular software, and the literally hundreds of hours necessary to install, test, convert the existing data and most of all configure and modify (there are dozens of small hacks we have added to this software to make it work better) are simply not available. And after all that, you end up with a forum that is almost identical... I'm also a massive fan of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". It ain't broke so we ain't gonna fix it. Now, saying that, any practical suggestions for streamlining the existing forum are always welcome. They may not be practical from a time and/or capability standpoint but we will certainly consider them. Cheers, Bob. |

Thanks to its relatively simple layout this site loads almost instantly. I love the uncluttered pages. What more do I want or need on a discussion forum?
The only minor complaint is the relatively small file size limit- 200kb for photos means we don't really see them at their best. Of course, you can always upload to a site like flickr and link the image. I wouldn't mess with what we have. |
