Default Paterson Orbital.

Hi All,

Finally just got round to shooting my first ever piece of 9x12 (cm) film, and will be developing it in an Orbital.

Can anyone tell me what quantities of chemicals I should be using ?

I guess about the same as a system 4 tank (300ml), but confirmation or otherwise would be great.

Ian

Ian, I use my Paterson orbital to develop 4 sheets of 5x4 film at a time. I use 300mls of developer which covers the film. I agitate continuously but VERY gently, by hand.
Others, with a motor, seem to use much less developer.

About half that will do... The measures with the tank are for 55 so that's the minimum. Depends on your developer.

Thanks for the replies. No motor on mine, manual only, I will be using ID11 1:1.

Remember, it's not just about enough chemistry to physically cover the film, there's also the working capacity.
Whatever dev your using should advise on minimum amount of solution per roll, or possibly square inches of film per 100 ml.

I have the motorised base and yet still use 300ml of developer - Did start out with 150ml, but ruined a few sheets due to uneven development. However, with 300ml, the motor is under heaver load and the base needs lubricating to keep things running smoothly. 9x12 film will need ~25ml of ID11/D76, so for four sheets at a time, 1+1 or even 1+2 dilution will work out quite well. Processing the odd single sheet may prove to be uneconomical..

From time to time, I'll use the tray for stand development with 1L of developer - Using the motorised base with 200-300ml for the initial 30-60Sec agitation, move the tray to a flat surface and add the rest of the developer.

Default Neg Problem,

Not my afternoon.

Developed the first two neg's,they were very thin, then realised I had not developed for long enough (misread the timings) so that explained that. No staining on either.

Shot another two, and developed, one way over exposed and a small cream stain, the other exposed about right, but has a massive cream coloured stain right down the middle of the neg, a complete right off.

Temp 20C, new batch of ID11 1:1, FP4+, Del for 11 min continuous agitation in Orbital, stop for 30sec, and fixed for 2min. What did I do wrong to create the awful stain ?

I will post a scan of the offending neg when it's dry.

Here is the neg as promised, hope it helps with the diagnosis.

Ian - I suggest you re-fix that negative. Do it in a dish. You may see the stain disappear, leaving you a usable image.

I also suggest starting at 360ml and working down from there; and Trevor Crone's method (in one of the older threads on this topic) works very well.

What volume of developer did you use ?

A cream coloured "stain" would suggest insufficient fixing, so another couple of minutes should cure that.

One (minor) issue I have with the Orbital is the neg "sticks" to the bottom of the tray and prevents the chemicals from getting to the back. This manifests itself as a dark blue (with FP4+) stain across part of the neg which is cleared up by a further soak in fixer in a regular processing tray. To reduce this problem, some gouge grooves in to the Orbital tray, others place dabs of hotmelt glue. I use a sheet of mesh as sold by Silverprint as drying screen material - A rectangular piece cut just under 10"x8" works very well.
