Ilford Multigrade developer at 1+14
I just noticed that Multigrade developer can be prepared at 1+14, as well as the more usual 1+9. Does anyone use it this way? Does it make any difference, other than longer developing times? Alex

I have used Multigrade at 1/14, and I also use Patterson acugrade at 1/14, and I the longer developer time gives more control and better detail and contrast, with the image taking a bit longer to come to the time you can see the image building slowly, this is especialy true with RC paper, with FB the difference would not be so much

I've wondered about this too but haven't had any MG Dev to hand to try it for a while as I'm using up a stock of other stuff that's been lying around.
I dilute Bromophen more than the usual 1:3 unless I want fast developing, it reminds me of when I first used Ilfospeed. One of the things I had lying around for some time was an old pack of dry powder Eukobrom. Worked perfectly and like Bromophen could be diluted much more than the pack said. |

Now that's interesting. The biggest print I can make is 12x16 and at 1-9 dilution giving me 1 litre of developer it can be a struggle to keep the paper submerged all the time. The extra dilution will provide that extra depth of liquid which will make it easier.
I normally develop for longer than the standard 2 mins with Fbr based paper, what would others suggest? (I use Kentmere) |

I hadn't thought of the extra volume benefit for tray processing. I only use trays for the occasional big print, but I know the difficulty keeping them under. I will try the lower dilution next time I fill my Nova, and report back. Alex

Richard has given us "better detail and more contrast". Out of academic interest, I'd be interested in whether, even very marginally, the increased dilution gives a warmer look as well as Richard's qualities
I rather doubt it with a neutral paper but it's worth asking Thanks Mike |

I use MG 1+9 in a slot processor but as it happens developer level sinks and then I replenish with water so after some time the dilution has become 1+10 or 1+11 but I can't see any difference to the prints

In my experiance with neutral tone papers you get no more warmth, certainly not with the Kentmere VC Select, but with the slightly warmer papers, such as the Fotospeed RCVC paper,I have seen a little more warmth with the more dilute developer, this applies mainly to Acugrade, which I currently use a lot, but I don't see why MG developer should not be the same, I mainly like the extra control the more dilute dev gives, I develop my Kentmere paper, and the RCVC for 3 minutes in the more dilute developer. Richard, how can a more diluted developer give 'more contrast'? I'm not saying it can't provide the same contrast with prolonged development, but more?

I don't know how a more diluted developer gives more contrast, but for me, using either RCVC or Kentmere VC select it just works better for me, maybe it wouldn't suit everyone, but it is a way of working that I like, Maybe also it suits the paper's I use,
