Default Hi from Neilston, Glasgow

Hi all, just signed up here after being referred to this site. I have just bought my latest camera, a Olympus OM10, with the standard 50mm, and also a 135 f3.5 and a Vivitar 70-200. Also bought some Ilford HP5+ and can't wait to start shooting film again. I have bought most of what I need to develop my own, just need to get the chemistry now. Still researching the most forgiving combination for a newbie

Looking forward to learning and hopefully sharing some of my own images on this exciting journey!

Thanks,

Garry

Hi Garry.

Welcome aboard.

The OM10 is a well respected camera so no worries there.

I suspect you may find a lot of suggestions for a forgiving developer. Saying that, B&W film in general is fairly flexible. As long as you make some attempt at keeping the developer time and temperature close to the ideal you should be fine. If the temp drifts by a degree or so in the approx 10 mins it takes to develop a film it is unlikely to be a major problem ('tho do try to get these as close as possible).

The time & temperature of the other chemicals is not nearly as critical as long as you give the fixer time to do its thing.

Have fun, Bob.

Hi Garry and welcome to Fadu, one developer that is pretty forgiving is D76/ID11, one from Kodak and the second from Ilford, both basically the same formula, but they are powder and must be mixed, another that I use all the time is RO9/one shot, one of the oldest formula's still being made, and the concentrate lasts for ever. I have used Rodinal (RO9 Formula) from a glass botttle that must have been 30 years or more old, black as tar, but still working as new,
Richard

Hi Garry, welcome to FADU!

Glesga is a nice city, been there a few times. When I'm there you can find me in the Bon Accord at night

Regarding developer: Either D76/ID11 or Xtol will be great universal choices!

Hi Garry. Nice to see you here!
I'm also an ID11 fan, not least because you can buy it over the counter in Glasgow at the shop in Parnie Street. The 5 litre pack is best value, but you need to mix it all at once so need storage bottles. You can also get Ilfosol 3, a liquid concentrate. It's very easy to use, and is recommended for slow and medium speed films. The only caution I would give is that the concentrate goes off quickly unless decanted to smaller bottles to keep air out. Stop and fixer can be whatever is available. I make a litre of each and reuse it for the recommended number of films. Keeping these prepared chemicals in the house means that they are near 20c when you need them.
Looking forward to hearing how you get on.
Alex

Hi Gary,

Welcome to the forum.

As for a forgiving developer, I would also suggest D76 / ID11 I'm not much more than a newbie myself compared to others on here.

Welcome Garry. That's a nice camera kit. I used to use Ilford DDX. It comes in a 1L liquid container and is good for the whole range of films up to and including Ilford's fast film D2300. Inert gas such as Protectan will keep air from getting to the liquid as it goes down.

Not the cheapest of developers but it might be an easier one to start with.

Now I use Xtol at 1+1. This is powder so needs to be mixed into 5L of stock solution which I then decant into empty winebags in their original boxes. No air gets into the bag as you use the developer, it just collapses on itself

If you want more details then drop me a PM and I'll let you know more.

Mike

Cut my photographic teeth in and about Paisley (from Elderslie) and the Paisley Photographic Society. And though now down in deepest Dorset (where the camera clubs are no match).
