Ilford Manual of Photography
I received today as a gift the above book purchased by a friend at a second hand book sale. It is edited by George E. Brown. I checked it out on the Internet and reckon it was published between 1935 and 1939. There are throughout the book beautiful sepia toned photos.
I wonder if anyone is familiar with the book?

Vincent, I had my luck at a local boot fair earlier on in March this year. For 50p, I've got the Ilford Manual of Photography edited by James Mitchell, original edition from 1942! Great book.

It's a very useful and informative book, actually a series, since it has been updated and reprinted many times.

I've had a 1950s copy since I was a student and still refer to it.

My copy's the 1942 edition, reprinted in 1949, and the foreword states that the book has been published "for more than fifty years". As Cliveh says, it's the photographic bible. Amazon.co.uk has dozens of copies listed, one dating from 1901!

I have a few editions, starting with what I think is around 1897 or perhaps a few years later (that is the date on the price list section in the back of the book - prices in those days did not change as often as now!).
Not a 1st edition by any means - "Revised and Stereotyped Edition - Seventy Fifth Thousand" which I assume means there were at least one previous edition and that they had sold 75,000 copies already. |

Have just clicked the the one click purchase button on Amazon, think that makes it a second edition. Should make interesting reading!

I have the 1971 edition, after Chilton's took the book and the Ilford name was dropped from the title, though it is mentioned in the subtitle.
