I have the original book, and also an article about how Paul Graham went about having it self published from Camera magazine.

It was quite an influential body of work, it's worth a deeper look.

Default The A1.

I have been driving or riding my M/cycles up and down the A1 since the early 1960's and it has changed out of all recognition. I can think of only 3 or 4 sections, maybe 5 which are not motorway or dual carriageway. Even they are due to be eliminated in the not too distant future.

Today I still prefer to use it in preference to the M1.

There are still bottlenecks, the worst regular one I think is around the Newcastle (west) bypass and if you are travelling up north it may be better to divert onto the A19 through the Tyne Tunnel.

There is a marked lack of places to stop as well. Gone are the regular 'Little Chefs'. As 'plastic' as the food was, they gave a safe place to stop to stretch your legs. Coming south from Edinburgh after 6pm there is only one place in 120 miles where you can find refreshment without diverting off route.
