Default How long do you leave it to print from a neg.

How long do you leave it until you make your first "serious" print from a negative?

I ask because I made my first "serious" print today from a negative I made in 2004. Although a lot of my negatives are printed within 12 months of taking.

I too have an untold quantity of those. Many will never make it into print.

I never print straight away. Sometimes a neg will "appear" from a few years ago after browsing the files, and I have a new take on it.

I never have enough negs to print! It drives me mad!
I only shoot 5x4 so if I manage to shoot 6 sheets in a day I've done well. Quite often I will look at the dried negs and decide if their is anything worth printing, if I'm not sure I make a straight work print which sits on the mantle piece for the evening so I can really look at it and then decide if its worth going to town on.
Am I expecting to much from myself? Too fussy?

I developed some negs last night and normally I would of printed today but I've had a good clean out of my darkroom today so I'm saving those negs for tomorrow night.

I find making a contact sheet of my negs is worthwhile and of course being in a camera club encourages me to print for competitions and exhibitions.

Usually I'm so excited I can't wait to print. Not all of them of course, but a select few will get printed - even if only to the 'work print' stage - within 48 hours of my return from a trip. Having said that I do often look back through my folders and 'discover' negs I had previously overlooked. Like most other people I have far too many negs to even consider printing them all.

With me there is usually a long'ish gap before the film/s actually get developed into negs! But once I have the neg/s I am usually quite good at turning them into contacts and making a few small working prints. After that stage I then decide if anything is there that is worth making a serious exhibition quality print from, this could be up to say 9 months from the actual exposure. I seldom go back and work from negs that I have not worked from several years ago but recently I have done just that with a negative I made back in 1996!
