I have been looking at some metz flash guns like the metz mecablitz 70-mz4 would these flash guns work on our film cameras ,they seem quite cheap for modern flash guns ...

Yes they'll work.

The advantage of using something like the Mz70 is that you can change the SCA adapters to suit the camera used.

The only difference between digital and film flash is the trigger voltage which can damage digital cameras if it's too high (from an old flash).

I use a 40 as it's small and powerful with my LF & MF cameras as well. I also have 45's and 60's when more power is needed.

Default Flashguns

As far as I am aware, a flashgun designed for say a digital Nikon will work on a film based Nikon later than the FE2/FA and all the autofocus ones as well. The same may be true with the likes of Canon, Pentax, Sony (Minolta) etc.

I happily swap my digital Sigma flash between my D300s and my F6 with no problems.

No problem. The flash in question works on any camera, no need for a dedicated SCA adapter. Simply set your flash to "A" and you are good to go! The sensor in every Metz flash gun I have tried is good enough even for exposing slides.
