David Hurn and Bill Jay - On Being a Photographer
Required reading for the Degree students at the University Centre Blackburn College. If you only read one theory book this should be it. Perhaps a little dated now but is still a vital resource for any student of photography (and aren't we all?). Hurn established the once renown photo-documentary course at Newport and this book is presented as a two way conversation between him and the co-author, Bill Jay. Hurn doesn't sit on any fences and can be quite didactic in his approach - a good thing, if you ask me. This book shows how to 'be' to be a photographer. Usually found as a slim paperback or as a (free if you must, you cheapskate) downloadable PDF. But what is wrong with buying a book.
