Neg Contrast for split grade printing?
Les,
Somewhere I saw that you use a higher contrast negative for split grade printing. Just wondering what the reason for that is. Particulalry whether you find it gives gentler highlights by doing so.

When I started to experiment with split grade printing in the early 90's I tried many different types of negative to determine the best combination of negative and filtration. When I printed with high contrast negatives I realised that the contrast acted as a mask for example, because the negative is more dense in the highlight area it blocks the grade 5 exposure which produces the darkest tones and introduces contrast into the image. I therefore started experimenting with negative development to determine the best combinations of time, temperature and dilution for the film and developer that I use.
With regard to the highlights in the final print I do feel that the split grade printing method I use together with personal judgement helps me achieve the highlight I prefer for the image. |

Thanks,
One further thing, what are you using for filtration? Ilford filters and if so which do you use for soft, 0 or 00 or do you use dichroic or cold light head? Thanks Rob
