I have an FA which I bought cheaply and also because I wanted the lens that was attached to it. The multi-pattern metering I find gives much the same readings as incident on my Weston which is useful for me.
The silver lacquer has rubbed at the corners of the top plate, revealing polycarbonate not brass. A thing to watch out for is the settings switch which is easy to knock to the wrong position with a carelessly placed finger. I did this once in dim light, reduced power flash modelling lights, and instead of shooting at M1/250 for flash the camera was firing at aperture priority auto. You can use the MD12 or MD15 motor drives, the 15's batteries also power the camera. If you set M1/260 with the MD12 the mirror will lock up and you have to change shutter speed to free it. It has TTL flash capability with a lot of Nikon's own older flashguns, not sure about more modern, I use an SB15. |

Just watched it. A quite delicate job or so it looked to me but that may be because I have never tried any repairs of any kind.
Best of luck, paddy Mike |

Definitely worth a try. If I do something like this, I use my phone to make pictures of every stage of disassembly. It helps me remember what it all looked like before I got in about it. You can buy special (JIS?) screwdrivers if you are likely to operate on more cameras, but maybe not worth it just for one. The ones I have are made by Vessel, and definitely a sound investment. Good luck with the repair.

The video maker may have covered his cleaning fluid choice and what looks like grease in another video but if it was aimed at beginners thinking about camera repairs then a quick mention of his cleaner and grease and where to obtain the specialist tweezers etc would have been helpful

Amazing! I just love the way that experts in these various fields, (just like watching surgery and brain operations on some of these telly programmes) make it look so easy!
I've just watched another video about removing fungus from an internal lens element. I was gripped to the screen, more than I have with most films lately, which says a lot about my viewing habits I suppose. But yeah, the original video didn't make it look TOO hard a job, so I'd definitely give it a go and like said already, photograph it all along the way to make sure you get the bits back in the right order and the right way up and around! Oh well the FA came today, that was fast shipping from Japan and no customs/Duty charges
The camera looks mint after i give it a clean and after putting new batteries in it works like a dream, a great camera that im surprised never caught on, i will put some pics up On another note i took the bottom plate off the FE2 and cleaned the same mechanisms in the youtube video without taking anything apart I used deoxit D5 that is a lubricating electronic/electrical contact cleaner The FE2 is working spot on now without jamming, the lever is nice and smooth like it has been serviced, i will have to get some lubricating oil to put in the parts as i have only cleaned the crap out Easy to do if you dont take anything apart If you look at the comments underneath he says what lube he uses I have my FE2 working again and a new FA |
