Arrow does diffuser structure show up in prints?

Hello Les,

I am using a DURST M601 enlarger, which I recently 'upgraded' with a CLS66 color head mainly to have a diffuse light source. When doing my first calibration of my new ZoneMaster II I noticed that the gray in the test stripes was uneven or foggy. I experimented and made several tests. The manual of the ZM II recommends to do the calibration at the smallest f-stop (here 22). Experimenting around I found that with f'8 the gray becomes almost even and at f'4 it is perfect. The only reason for this I can think of is that with the small f-stop the structure of the diffuser of the light mixing box just above the negative gets into focus and so shows up in the print. Do you think that is possible and is there a smart way around it, changing to a better diffuser for example?

Thanks in advance for your opinion
Cheers Klaus-G.

Hi Klaus

I'm sorry to say that this question is about a matter that I have very little knowledge or experience. I'll speak to someone who I think will know and get back to you as soon as possible.

Hi Klaus,

Sorry for the delay in replying, my wife and I spent the last few days with friends. On my return I'd received an email from Luis, another FADU user, who has had much experience with diffuser enlargers and he suggests that it may be that you have the wrong mixing box in place for the format you are using. I've used a cold cathode light source for most of my time and have limited experience with diffuser enlargers.

Many thanks to Luis for helping us out with this question, his response is typical of the friendship and expertise we have here in FADU.

Dear Les,

don't worry, this was faster than I expected! Thanks also to Luis for his hint. However, I use the 6x6 mixing box for 4.5x6 negatives. I'll experiment some more with it.

Best from snow-covered Cologne

Klaus-G.
