Just out of interest but does anyone know if what they say is the capacity is the exact capacity? Let me amplify:
My tanks are 250ml so ideally a 250ml or a 125ml would be the ideal sized bottles for stock or half size for 1+1 There was one company who sold 120ml sizes - it may have been Baldwins - but it seems to sell mainly liquids and "stuff" rather than specialise in empty bottles. The others are in slightly less convenient jumps beyond 50ml so it's 50ml, 100ml then 200ml so OK two bottle combos do cover the quantities such as 100 +30 or 200 + 50 but it increases the number of bottles I doubt if a 100ml will hold 125ml but it might come close if filled to the rim but does anyone know? Thanks Mike |

The bottles I have had so far when stated to be 100cc are actually close to 120cc. The 150cc which I use for storing pre mixed C41 will take about another 25cc and the 500 cc about 530cc. It also varies with the size of the cap as well. The bottles taking the larger cap have a wider neck and consequently more open space.

Thanks John 120cc gets close enough to 125cc in the likes of Xtol to make no difference and in fact the Jobo tank is actually 240ml although I found this makes the margin for coverage with even a few drops of spillage a little too close for comfort
I use emptied green lemon juice bottle for film fixer and the margin there is only 7ml. The bottle has a stated capacity if 250ml and will hold to the brim only 7ml more so that is pretty accurate Mike |

I think there is a bit of science involved when a bottles size is given.
Different air gaps for different contents. Ketchup bottles tend to be full to the top. Wine and fortified wine bottles often have reasonable air gap, whilst spirits bottles, milk bottles etc. are often full almost to the cap. The old glass lemonade bottles had a very small air gap. I remember one hot summer people were being seriously injured by exploding glass pop bottles. Bottles were leaving the factory with large airgaps in the necks of the bottles. Because of the heatwave, the carbon dioxide gas instead of staying in solution in the lemonade built up in the unusually large air gap in the necks and exploded the bottles, injuring enough people for the problem to appear on local TV and in the news papers. The public blamed the makers for trying to reduce the amount in each bottle and thereby sell more bottles. The makers blamed the unusually hot weather for causing the fizzy lemonade to froth up on the bottling plant. Hence the measured amounts overflowed, leaving a large unsafe airgap in the bottle. So it would seem to be horses for courses. Some bottles are way over size and some fairly exact. The bottles are probably designed with a specific style of product in mind. I hope this makes sense. Cheers all. |
