Default Perceptol again

Do you really see any benefits in dilution 1+3 over 1+1?
What are these?

Folker,
I think 1+3 gives the same fine grain as 1+1 but more sharpness, more bite. And more film speed.
As for which is "better"....?

I have had some good success with 1+3 and HP5+ 35mm. Given a grainy tendency with ID11 for HP5+ in 35mm and the stories of how the bigger dilution of Perceptol leads to bigger grain I was pleasantly surprised by lack of grain at 1+3, like Alan.

My shot was of a wooden sculpture of two eagles set in genuine trees. They were quite far away and the best I had was a 28-80 lens so on the neg the birds were quite small. I had to enlarge the neg considerably to get a good 5 inch by 7 inch print of one of the birds. The overall full neg print would have been close to 12 x16 inches and yet the 5x7 print wasn't as grainy as I had expected.

I was sorting through some old prints last night and came across this print so I am not just relying on memory.

The price you pay is that developing time gets long at 20 degrees C.

Mike

James Ravilious also settled on Perceptol 1+2, with HP5 and Tri X, after his early negatives proved difficult to print.

I used Perceptol @ 1+3 for HP5 a few years ago. I was pleased with the sharpness and the fine grain, but with 1+3 the extended development times are 20mins plus, I did sometimes get surge marks and bromide drag.

It sounds as if you believe there was a connection between the 1+3 dilution and surge marks and bromide drag which is a little worrying. Can you say what you think the causal link was and more importantly how to does one prevent it? I have often heard of surge and bromide drag. What does it look like?

Maybe I have has similar marks without recognising what they were?

Thanks

Mike
