Default Les Mclean

Is Les still kicking or has he passed on to the big darkroom in the sky?

He came to Calgary for a workshop years ago and our large format group was wondering how he is doing.

I don't have a beard, I can't play the piano, therefore I have no hope of being a photographer.

A couple of years back there was a rumour that Les had died.
Turned out a Les MacLean had passed away, but not our Les.
Very much hope that's still the case.

Les is a member of this forum. If I were in his position, I'd hate to read speculation about whether I had died or not. This thread makes me very uncomfortable indeed.

I think Les passed to the Darkside quite a few years ago, he did work and lectured for Permajet demonstrating their Inks and Papers at the NEC where I'd bump into him. That's going back to the early 2000's.

The Darkside - yes. Soime time ago, perhaps 5-6 years or so, he advertised for anyone with spare or not wanted Nikon EN-EL3e batteries and as it happened I had three and sold them to him so as far as I know he is alive and kicking somewhere in North Northumberland.

Eric, I just checked on the section on the opening page of FADU that says "friends" and he last visited the site almost exactly 4 years ago but a quick Google search makes no mention of death so I assume alive and hopefully in good health.

What did seem strange however is that Google has a correct picture of our Les and most of the rest of the details about him seem to be right but it lists his address as an area of London. He may have moved from the Northumbria of course but as he is presumably at least now semi-retired it just seems strange that having lived all his life in the North-East he decided to move to London

Here's a mention of his activity in 2019.

I'm with Michael on this one. If someone is concerned about the welfare of a member here, why not just send them a PM directly and keep it off the open forum? Assuming their email address is still active, they will receive the message.

I think sometimes we forget that, although we are a small group here, everything we write can be read by anyone on the internet, anywhere in the world. Our forum is not private. Something to keep in mind as we chat back and forth.

that date 4 years ago could have been when he was after Nikon batteries - I could not be sure. We had a chat on the 'phone and as far as I recall he was still engrossed with photography and was about to lead a group.
I do know he did have friends living in Sussex near the south coast but that is 50 miles away from London.

John, having given this some more thought, it might be a business address that is used for business communications only. For all sorts of reasons I can understand not wanting a private residential address being on display for the whole world to see

I may have mentioned this bit of trivia here before but may be 10 years or more ago the wife and I weres on the North Yorks Moor railway on day tickets that allows you to get on an off at as many stations as you like and there was a kind of a classic car and bike show going on at Levisham. In addition to the show there was a marquee with a group consisting of very good drummer and three guitarists who were playing Shadows hits, dressed in the same formal penguin outfits favoured by the band and who were only slightly younger than the Shadows were. One of the guitarists on the stage looked very like the pics of Les who is a guitarist himself. I had to go much closer to the front of the marquee to see that it wasn't Les but it was just the sort of thing I imagined Les might get up to
