Default Cetein (or Cetien)

Once upon a time there was a monochrome printing guru called Cetein (or was it Cetien?) and I have tried to Google him and searched FADU posts. No luck... Any suggestions?

Ctein specialised in colour printing using a technique called Dye Transfer. He was the very last practitioner but wrapped it up a couple of years ago- at least one member on here bought a print in his 'closing down' sale (sorry, can't remember who told me!).
Here he is:

Now firmly a digital worker. He used to post on Mike Johnson's The Online Photographer

I have a copy of his book 'Post Exposure' - very technical. He was very critical of the keeping properties of RC Paper which I have only experienced with the occasional print.
I seem to remember that he used to contribute to a magazine - Darkroom User, I think.

I got an evening job in New York City at Kurshen and Lang in 1965, "Rolling Dyes". I was taught to do it at Regent St Poly. Since the dyes come from a bottle and don't have to be generated by colour-couplers within an emulsion, the quality is unsurpassed. The last prints to be made this way were by Technicolor, which is a directly-related technology using matrices of gelatine on acetate base. Each matrix is exposed through the base before processing to create a varying thickness of gelatine, which absorbs varying amounts of dye, which is then rolled onto a receiving sheet of paper.

I think he also made claims that a large proportion of top enlarging lenses were badly centred and this was reflected in uneven performance.

It was he that pushed the idea of focusing through a blue filter, which would partly correct for chromatic aberration in lenses used with B&W material.

Thanks for that post, Jerry.
Do you think that he took up digital printing when he found that his truly impressive beard dipped into the dishes of dyes?

I have the book "Post Exposure" by Ctein.

At one time on APUG this was regarded by some as a sort of bible.

Printed by Focal Press.

Hope this helps

Martin
