Gold toner for vandykes
Hi folks
I am looking for a gold toner for vandyke prints to make them permanent I was going to buy the bostick and sullivan pop goldtoner but at the checkout the cheapest shipping was $75 (exit) Im waiting for wolfgang moersch to reply to an email i sent him yesterday. Is it possible to buy a 1l bottle of tetanal gold toner and water it down as vandyke prints need a much weaker gold toner than one for silverprints I am going to print A4 size images on 15x11 fabriano artistico paper and will probably use 100ml for each print in a flat tray Say 100ml of gold toner to 900ml of water (10 prints) This will be a one shot solution instead of using till exhaustion Does anyone know what is in the tetanal gold toner Anyone help please Paddy |

What makes you think Van Dyke prints aren't permanent. I have left these in the garden with a brick on them for several days in bright summer sunshine, with no discernible difference in tone when the brick is removed.

Hi Clive
It is impossible to get rid of all the iron salts in the print and over time will attack the silver and make it fade eventually If you tone in gold it replaces the silver making it last a lot longer as gold is a noble metal Im no chemist by the way, just what i have read, heres a good article by sandy king http://sandykingphotography.com/reso...riting/vandyke I will print some vandykes and leave them untoned as i like the brown colour Paddy |

After reading up on vandykes my process methods will be (with 55% humidity and 20 degrees ambient temp throughout)
1-soak fabriano artistico paper in water with 1% citric acid for 3 minutes @ 20 degrees and let dry for a couple of days (too warm could remove sizing) 2- double coat the paper with vandyke solution and let dry inbetween coats 3- expose image with negative in homemade contact frame under uv light and clear image in water with 2% citric acid @ 20 degrees for 2 minutes and a second bath of water with 1% citric acid @ 20 degrees for 2 minutes 4- wash in normal tapwater for 3 minutes with no acid, as citric acid can damage the gold toner 5- put the print in a suitable dilution of gold toner till colour goes to black/grey, meaning the toner has converted nearly all the silver with gold 6- put the print in a 5% solution of sodium thiosulphate (fixer) for 3 minutes @ 20 degrees, then a second fixer bath with 3% fixer for 3 minutes @ 20 degrees 7- put the print in nova print washer for 30 minutes 8- Dry print by blotting gently and leave to dry Hopefully this will leave a print that will last just as long as a platinum print I am hoping to do some street photographs/portraits on the streets of Liverpool city centre and probably pass them to the museum after i have long gone Paddy Last edited by paddy; 5th March 2016 at 10:33 AM. |
