Cable release repair
If you have light weight metal or cloth covered cable releases that are fraying or coming apart here's a tip for reviving them.
3mm or 5mm heat shrink material for wiring works well, you just cut a piece to size and thread the cable release into it then heat with a hair drier or heat gun. It's available in Maplin stores or online, a 1m lenght is under £3, it's just called 3.0mm or 5.0m heat shrink. Ian Last edited by Lostlabours; 6th December 2012 at 07:26 PM. |

A quick tip about heat shrink tubing:
If you want to know how small it will go after heating, stretch a small piece to breaking point. Either side of the break it will thin down to its final potential diameter. Obviously, if it's marked up with a diameter, you don't need to bother! Steve. |

Just to add, the 5mm heat shrink will shrink sufficienly to cover a then cable release, the 3mm may be difficult to use with some.
If you want you can use two layers on the ends to add additional strength, put the shorter pieces on first then the outer layer is smoother. Ian |

Took your advice Ian and used the 5mm heat shrink. Glad i did nothing smaller would have threaded over the metal part of the cable that screws to the camera. Great idea!

Damn. I have some small heat shrinks. And I've just ordered a new cable release to relace one where the plastic sheath has detatched from the metal release end.

Any suggestions as to how you can repair the threads of a release socket? I find that the socket on my Bronic SQa has worn so that the cable won't stay in place. It is the common conical type thread.

Also try different cable releases they aren't uniform in their fit, there's quite significant differences between some of them. Ian |
