Theory would have it that a good squirt should do as Butane is heavier than air so would settle on top of the liquid but below any air in the container , thereby shielding the liquid from the any air not displaced by the gas ? Personally I would just give it a good stiff blast Also if I recall correctly lighter butane tends to discharge in a white cloud ? so as Mike says you should be able to see any overspilling from the container .

Regards , Paul

Take care "a good stiff blast" can remove the very contents that you are trying to protect to your shirt front. I speak from experience.

I second Dave's caveat. It would have happened to me but for the liquid being well down the container. A bit of care with the "trigger finger" is recommended.

It's worth mentioning that whilst the Protectan is more expensive than lighter gas, the can does seem to last for ever - I've been using the same one for some time now and was expecting it to have run out ages ago.

I agree, I started using mine in May 2009, it still feels more than half full.

Same experience again as Dave and Matt. On a per "burst" basis it is quite economical. As it expands as gas a little goes a long way.
