I actually live in the UK, though I'm from Germany originally.

Don't buy pre cut as that's expensive. A full sheet gives 4 20x16 sheets with some offcuts and works out far cheaper, it's easy to cut matt board down.

A Stanley khife and a good metal rule, I just use a 4ft length of Aluminium is all you need to cut to size, then a good matt cutter for bevelled edges.

You need some heavy duty card board as the base to cut on most framing suppliers carry what you need.

Arts and crafts supply places do some forms of mount board, Hobbycraft here in the UK were definitely selling it in my local store:

No idea on the quality as I haven't bought from them.

Default Mounting Board

Sorry MHXHM.

I looked at your profile and saw - Germany. Any half decent art shop will sell A1 sheets of 'Daler' 6 ply card. It is getting quite expensive now, around £4 a sheet, so if you buy a full packet (10 sheets) they will usually give you a discount - typically 10%.You can get 4 ply sheets much cheaper but they feel quite poor quality.

I don't know where you live, but if you are anywhere near to Darlington in Co Durham, I can point you in the direction of a wholesaler I bought my last lot from. He was actually very reasonably priced.

Cutting thick card cleanly requires a very sharp blade and firm pressure. To avoid accidental injury it's important to prevent the straight edge from slipping. I use a stainless-steel 1 metre (29") ruler with medium-grit wet & dry abrasive glued on the back, which I saw used by picture-framers on the continent. Our local UK picture framer uses a non-slip rubber backing.

D'oh! I agree, that's a bit confusing. I've removed that, doesn't really matter anyway.

Thanks for your help!

I have used this for years and years. Rather than glueing the strip onto the straight edge, I use double sided adhesive tape. Not as messy as adhesive and is more or less permenant. In preference to wet and dry I prefer to use emery cloth. It is easier to tear into strips and the tape stick to it like you know what!

I'm originally from Thuringia, but spent the last 10 years before moving to the UK in 2011 living near Stuttgart in the south west. Not too much experience with Bavaria except for the occasional trip to Munich (but that was all more than 10 years ago as well). I'm in Berlin quite frequently these days.

What are you up to? Holidays?

Default Holiday

Yes thats the idea. 13 days, 2100 miles (3360kms) on a motorcycle, plus a camera and lenses. Through Germany then as far south as Switzerland, Italy, Austria, back into Germany at Garmisch Partenkirchen, before returning home almost by a reverse, but more direct route home, Good roads, good beer, good food, superb scenery and (usually) good weather.
