RO water instead de-ionised water
Living in an area of very hard water I have been using de-ionised water to mix up DD23 and my paper developers. A freind suggested it would be cheaper to use RO water which is available locally at 10p a litre.
Does anyone use RO water to mix up chemicals? Andrew F |

There is no problem about using it for most formulations, as you are going to buy it, anyhow RO for a single home installation plus water wasted in the process won't make it cheap. I'd look for a second hand water distiller in that case.

Andrew,
I guess you are able to get it from a tropical fish supplier? It's often used to fill tanks, and I guess it is perfect for photography. Sorry, not used it myself... |

Our requirement is for clean water that has a fairly neutral Ph. Commercial developers are designed to work in a wide range of Ph conditions so water Ph is not normally an issue. Removing dissolved minerals from the water is the main issue for us.
For convenience I use an in-line water filter that was sold to convert tap water to drinking water, not that ours needs converting. The unit came with a natty little tap and cost about £30 with a couple of spare filters. You can use deionised, distilled or R.O. water if these are more convenient for you, for our purposes they are equal. I use filtered water to dilute my developer and for the final rinse of negatives, for the remainder of my processes I use straight tap water. |

I use cooled boiled water for making up developers, no oxygen left in it after boiling. I have some ID11 that is still good after over a year.
