Ilford FB matt Substitute
Hi, can anyone help me. I was wondering if Kentmere fineprint FB finegrain was a good substitute for ilford FB matt as i need a cheaper option.
thank you Kimberellie |

The finegrain surface is more textured than Ilford Matt, but also sadly it is no longer produced. If you can find some, great, but don't get too used to it as there can't be much left in the supply chain

Look for Fomabrom 112 or Adox Vario Classic matt / Efke Varycon. They both resemble Ilford 5k - my favourite paper surface, by the way.

I don't know whether this is relevant or not or if anyone knows but in the 1970s at college I sometimes used Kodak Bromide paper, FB pre RC in matt finish which was dead flat. We dried it with the image against the cloth.
I believe there was starch grains in the surface/emulsion to achieve this and it never gave a true deep black. It did take ink, watercolour or dye hand tinting very well though I used to keep all test strips to test the colour as it would not wipe off if you made a mistake. Are there any current papers with this characteristic? Paul |
