Hello from Germany
Hello from Germany.
My name is Michael, I have started doing black and white photography two years ago and now built my own darkroom in a shed next to our house. This forum is an amazing place for ideas and discussions! I already learned a lot by just reading. The problem I am facing right now is darkroom but not photography related :-) A marten decided to spend the winter in the roof of my darkroom-shed. That would not pose too much of a problem, if the drop-ceiling were not made of plasterboards. I discovered a rather unpleasant smell in the darkroom a couple of days ago. Yesterday I discovered a yellowish spot on the drop ceiling. I think the marten has designated that spot as a toilet... Any ideas on how to get rid of the marten are highly appreciated :-) I know this is not directly photography related but I thought it might make for a good introduction :-) Cheers, Michael |

Hi Michael and welcome to Fadu, I can help with most photography related problems but can't help with the marten, where I come from it would be a protected species and I would just have to wait until it moved

Hello and welcome to FADU Michael.
I'm across the border in the Netherlands and we called out the council to get rid of what we thought were rats just from going by their droppings. Turned out they were from a Stone Marten and the pest controller could do nothing because they're a protected species here also. Apparently they like to chew through tubes and cables in cars so you may want keep an eye on that too! In the meantime best of luck.

Welcome Michael. I am sorry to hear of your problem. Hopefully there are no tubes or cables in your roof so the martin cannot do any further damage.
My understanding of British law is that it is protected if it is building a nest. So protection covers all stages from mating to leaving the nest but a bird on its own is not protected from ejection from a shed roof. However I would contact the German equivalent of the U.K.'s Royal Society for The Protection of Birds and get advice on its legal status and what you might do to (a) get rid of it and (b) prevent a return of it or any other bird. Best of luck Mike |

Welcome to FADU Michael. You must have a very cosy darkroom, you need to find where its getting in and out and when its out at night block up the entrance it will soon find somewhere more appropriate to live.
Best of luck. Richard |

Thank you for the warm welcome!
Thanks for welcoming me to the group!
I just checked the car for bites and the marten has been in the insulation in the hood, too. Not nice, but at least the cables and hoses in the engine are still intact. There are several little openings where the roof of my shed goes under the roof of the neighbours shed. I will fill most of those with concrete and then close the last ones at night when the marten is out and about in my car ;-) Hopefully that will do the trick. Cheers Michael |

Willkommen bei FADU, Michael!
I think only a live trap will help... Or ask a ranger. Last edited by mono; 31st December 2015 at 10:18 AM. |
