Hi from Northumberland
Hello there; please let me introduce myself. I am 59 and have lived in Northumberland for the last 22 years, though originally from Kent (Sittingbourne). Photography has been a major hobby and sometimes passion since 1975, originally using precious slide film sparingly in my Praktica. Various moves allowed space for a mono darkroom. This in now in its fourth incarnation as family growth encroaches. The present is a clever erection of prefabricated parts in the bathroom, and requires a certain dedication to pursue. I long for a permanent space again and may look into a small garden shed as a base, though fears of repeating the mouldy fate of the loft fiasco (No.3) tends to put me off. These days I mostly like to produce abstract landscapes along with the family record. I do have a digital SLR as it is fun and quick, but for anything meaningful, I usually reach for the FM2 and Provia. For serious photography it is the Mamiya TLR which I love, and Ilford. I have tried and tried to feel the same way about digital, but it just doesn’t have the same ‘reality’ for me. In fact the thrust of my recent Contemporary Photography degree dissertation was a heartfelt plea for the continuation of film. Mono magazine was an inspiration to me and its passing was a great sadness. This site is a recently discovered jewel.

Hi and welcome Stuart. If you are anywhere near the borders then you're in the very good company of Les McLean. Dave Miller is the master of darkroom construction from a garden shed and I am sure he'll be able to give good advice.

Thank you for your interesting introduction Stuart. You are amongst like-minded folks here so you will have a good time I am sure. I also use a FM2 occasionally and as it happens I am just about to start using it a bit more with fast film and a wide lens, they are great manual SLRs. There are quite a few of us here with darkrooms in sheds (see Dave's excellent article on this site) and the damp / mould problems can be alleviated with insulating the shed. I am in west Cornwall (very wet) and my shed darkroom has been fine with some insulation. Anyway a very warm welcome to FADU and I look forward to seeing some of you work in due course.
Neil.

Welcome to the Forum Stuart. I too started my photography in 1975 with a Praktica LTL
