Default Hi from North Wales!

Hi ya'all!
North Wales is usually my home but currently I am on assignment in Germany. I found this web-site through an article in B&W Photography Magazine. Good job we do not have to rely on US based web presences all the time. Marvelous to meet UK B&W Photographers here!

Well, I used to be a pro in photo-journalism and event photography. There was a time where I couldn't have enough gear, the newest cameras and the largest selection of lenses. Yes, I was a gear freak. I succumbed to the same gadgetry that occupies people that love fishing... sorry, love collecting fishing tackle!

I managed to do quite well in my work with professional digital equipment but finally had to realize that, especially in the professional imaging markets, only those will prevail that are prepared to ruthlessly commit to overseas travel at short notice and graft up to 20 hours in a working day. It has taken its toll and I have given up the race for fame (yes, the one that never existed in the first place).
As I started with digital I am now having to learn the art of printing in a dark room. I can't wait.
Fortunately I still receive assignments that let me work with B&W film and my day job supervisor is flexible enough to let me go off and do my 'photography thing', however long it may take.

I hope that I will be able to contribute to this site without boring too many of you.

Regards

Duncan

Hello Duncan and welcome to FADU. I enjoyed reading your introduction and it seems you have had an exciting photographic life. Good that you are using film and looking forward to getting creative in the darkroom.

Neil.

Well, since I started processing my own 35mm and 120 B&W Film things just came together. It seems that Digital images are just so short lived and 'consumed' ever so quickly. I love B&W as it can't be 'deleted' with the press of a button.
At the moment a friend does all my printing but I am learning...

Yes, I have been around (travelled) quite a bit during the last 10 years. Its just become too much for me lately.

Hi Duncan and welcome. On this site I think we are a "broad church" where all analoguers are catered for, wherever they are.

Hi and welcome to FADU I know what you mean about the 20hr days one of the downsides of the change to digital in commercial work. Film is for fun

Well, the problem is that you have to deliver your images faster and better at higher quality than the photographer next to you. No magazine or paper nowadays waits until the set deadline. They all publish what arrives first and is half decent. Its a cut-throat business and very dependent on the most modern technology!
That's lots of £££££ forked out with no images sold yet.

I learned to love film, having started with digital and then converted...

Welcome Duncan, so glad that you found us. We are having a meeting in North Wales later in October, perhaps your work commitments will allow you to join us.
