Default I.S.E 35mm Contact Printer and Print-File Sheets

Have you used an I.S.E Contact Printer for 35mm?
Do the contact sheets show the frame numbers?
Any problems with the top plate NOT being glass?

I have a Paterson and the slots are coming unstuck.
Am considering alternatives eg printing in Print File sheets.

Your experience and advice is much appreciated.
Thanks
Emerson

Hi Emerson. Nice to see another Canadian here! Caledon, Ontario for me.

I use the Print-File sheets for all my neg storage; have done for decades. These have some significant advantages over glassine sleeves: handheld viewing of negs; viewing on a light table with a loupe without removing neg from the sleeve, thereby avoid scratches and fingerprints and the inevitable clumsy drop onto the floor; and of course, contact printing directly through the sheet (under a sheet of glass). The only time I remove the negs is for scanning or printing. I have films stored in these since the early '80s and there is no sign of deterioration, so their archival claims seem to be well founded. Print-File are made in all sorts of configurations so finding one to fit your film formats will be no problem. Highly recommended.

Hope this helps...

Svend

I print through the Printfile sleeves, and would recommend that approach. Ideally, the glass you put on top should be in perfect condition, but in reality that doesn't matter too much. You get to know the imperfections, and which frames they will affect!

Alex, as another UK person, where do you buy your sheets from?

I've never used them but they do seem to be such an ideal answer for filing and contact sheet printing.

I've just seen this, Terry, so apologies for the delay. I got the last lot from Firstcall. They are not the US made ones I originally used as these had become difficult to source here recently, and had gone up in price quite dramatically. I think they are called Clearfile, but are basically the same thing, only cheaper. I'm assuming by Tony's post that the original Printfile product is available again from Silverprint.

I have used the see through negative sheets (Kenro) in the past but have found that the negatives eventually stick in the sleeves and so have stopped and only use the translucent paper ones.

Mike, I don't see that problem with the Printfile ones. Even with negs stored for more than 30 years. Maybe Kenro are prone to this, or perhaps the humidity in the storage room is too high? Just a thought...

Kenro use a different material for the clear sheets. I gave up on them as the last batch I bought you couldn't get the strips in. The Printfile and ClearFile ones are like polyethylene, and the strips go in and out with no sticking.
