Default retouching

I was a student at the the Regent Street Polytechnic 1961...65 and the lady who taught us retouching had 'a machine' that she used professionally when not teaching. Was it an Adams? We never saw it. The rumour was that she used it to remove (dark) pubic hair from photographs for 'Health and Efficiency' magazine, whose offices were not far away.
The trick was to apply a matte lacquer that, when dry, offered a 'tooth' to ordinary pencils. The graphite was then smeared with a sharpened papier-maché cylinder called a 'stub'. Is anyone still using this technique? In the old textbooks the benefit of large-format photography is that the negatives can be retouched.

There are older threads that get resurrected once in a while, so don't be too hard on yourself!

The main reason the Hollywood studios shot their stars on 10x8 was to allow the negatives to be retouched more easily.

There was a huge industry in retouching negatives to remove spots, wrinkles, blemishes,,,,,

Apparently, they could also reprofile your neck or chin if required.

A soft graphite pencil was the preferred weapon of choice.
