Victor If you get across to the U.K. and you will easily afford it when the $ buys a £ by early spring, try Liverpool. The Anglican Cathedral has all sorts of activities. It is anything but stuffy. In addition there's about a week's activities on Merseyside easily.
There's a saying there: "The discovery of America was the making of Liverpool" Mike |

...and then came the Beatles and the making of American culture! Thank god the Beach Boys were only a passing fad!

Many many of the provincial towns in the UK have a wealth of things tourists can see and do. It's just that when you come from far away on a two week visit and want to visit the main attractions of London York and Edinburgh, you ain't going to have time to get off the beaten track and visit some far less spoilt places. It's simply a question of doing proper research and assume that you will come back several times and don't treat it as ticking off a country as done. Then you can spend all of your holiday in a single region, spend less time travelling long distances and actually see some of what each area really has to offer. You can pick any of the regions, South West, Wales, Midlands, South Coast, South East, East Anglia, North West, North East, Scotland and just spend time in one of them. Even then you won't cover a tiny fraction of what they have to offer if you actually read up on what is on offer.
And yes, Durham is a very nice place to visit as a tourist and the Organs in the Cathedral are some of the best in UK. If you do go try and go when an organ recital is scheduled.

Victor,
I live fairly close to Durham and went to the university in the 1980s. It is a delightful place. The walk around the river bend looking up at the cathedral and castle is outstanding. Let me know if you ever arrange to visit. Les |

Interesting. Never been to Durham but must remember if ever I'm nearby or have time to spare while I'm whizzing past it on the A1(M)...
It often still amazes me how much sheer stuff there often is in even small towns if you know where to look and will just get out of the car and have a walk or cycle around. Oh yes...: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bLXAvp...eature=related |

There is nothing to stop any member arranging a meeting at any venue they think may be of interest to others. We have a section for such activities. In fact a day trip to Durham on a weekend could be within reach of many here.

Just a note of caution - photography isn't allowed inside the Cathedral (or wasn't last time I went a couple of years ago)
Which is a shame as the interior is fabulous and well lit (for a Cathedral that is) The town is a fascinating place and the River Walk (semi circular walk by the river around the outside of the old town) is a "must do" Martin |
