Default UK needs a forum

Hello again

I don't know how to deal with this but here goes:

Hybridphoto/DPUG is pretty dire, it is like APUG's undernourished sibling with an identity complex.

How difficult would it be to get a forum going in the UK that covered all processes related to 'analogue' photography: b&w, colour, scanning, darkroom, alternative, digital negs. Something modeled on APUG and FADU (experts and traffic as well as banter) but with an open mind towards digital photography as it is incorporated in film/silver/analogue methods, if and when it needs to be, that is.

So not a forum with digital cameras as a sub-forum (though what's wrong with that?) but analogue/alt process with a positive attitude to digital if and when it finds application.

I propose that it be called "Open Process Photography".

Thanks
Jon in the Lake District

PS: Don't tase me bro.

Simple enough to get a forum up and running - somewhat more difficult to find someone to run it and then find people to use it...

I see the attraction to some, but it's not going to happen on FADU so if you want to get something started I suggest you look at hosting plans that include one of the common forum software platforms.

You can probably get started for under £100 per year on hosting costs using one of the freeware forum software packages. Checkout the excellent Filmwasters forum @ http://www.filmwasters.com which uses SMF (but I've no idea how it is hosted) for an example of a freeware package in use.

A quick search on Google will throw up a dozen or so packages and many hosting plans.

Good luck.

Thanks, Bob. I have just read the 'history' page that Sean has on APUG and it is frightening how much time, money and effort it costs to run a forum. Respect to anyone that undertakes and sustains such a thing.

I might look at it some more but if anyone knows how to do it and wants to do it, I would donate the APUG subscripton amount per year.

I tried joining Filmwasters, though it is not really what I have in mind, and never got 'approved'. Photonet is great but it is getting very quiet and some of the giants are 'retiring' of late. Of course, there's the possibility that the next generation of photographers will revive things (Reddit has a few forums though they are without heavy hitters, IMO).

In a perfect world, Ilford would team up with Toshiba and bring out a Mono 1000 followed by XP3 100 ASA film, and the 'two-state solution' would look like 'old thinking'. In a more perfect world, I would acquire a darkroom and wonder what the hell I was so bothered about in the past. ;-)

Jon- you're tased dude! FADU is great because I can come here and it's about the only place I don't have to listen to noise about 'which printer' or 'photoshop has gone subscription, what to do?'
However- the other place I go is http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/forum.php
Now, it is Large Format, and it isn't UK- the slant is very American, but with quite a few UK posters including several from here.
There is plenty of discussion on Hybrid workflow, scanning, alternative process, digital negs et al. There is a real depth of photographic knowledge on LFF. There's even a lounge where small format shooters can post and discuss work. This is not entirely a glowing recommendation for the forum- it has a bigger proportion of arses than FADU by quite some distance, but is very active.
Go lurk for a bit.
Cheers, Skellum.

A bigger proportion of arses is what we, FADU friends and the mods need to jealously guard against here and I am sure we will do. In the thread on Ilford's discontinuation of one type of Kentmere paper the posts moved on to Ilford Pan film and an APUGer from the U.S. who has 2,700 posts quite innocently said he's never heard of this film. He got an immediate reply to the effect that in that case he would have been better served by reading 2,700 posts rather than posting 2,700 posts. It didn't look as if it was meant as gentle, humorous repartee

We need that kind of reponse here on FADU like we need a hole in the head

True Mike! I am the guy that mentioned PAN 100 as I was asking what is the production status of that film as there isn't a mention of it on Ilford's site. Was just wondering if there had been a discontinuation that had gone "under the radar".
Was appalled by the response of that US member.

DPUG is the best place to ask questions on hybrid techniques, it might be a touch quiet but has people who really know what they are talking about.

Some of the leading UK hybrid workers post their occasionally.

Mike, to be clear, I fully agree with you.
The LFF is a goldmine of info, and I found it very useful when I took up 5x4. However, I post sparingly there. On one occasion a couple of years back the animosity between two posters reached the "come round my house and I'll punch your face in" level. Pretty poor- and the tone does lead to wastage of members. People tire of the sniping and move on. FADU is certainly less busy, but comes with a whole lot less posturing and smartarsedness.
I like it here!

Thanks for the suggestions. I only encounter LFF during searches for things like developing times. I have been reading some stuff on Rangefinder forum as well, which must be similar as it has hybrid sub-fora on there.

I don't use rangefinders or LF cameras, and looking at the price of sheet film, I am almost glad. ;-)

Fadu is a great resource, I read it all the time, especially the posts by those with decades of experience.
