Default Cable Release Adapter

I have recently bought a Nikonos V camera which doesn’t have a cable release socket. It does, however, have a B setting, and a tripod socket. I plan to use it for foul weather photography, which is never that easy with standard 35mm cameras. I’ve ordered one of the adapters that has a belt and Velcro to hold it in place. The cable action seems to simply push on the shutter button. Has anyone tried one of these? Are they any good? If so, they could also be useful with many 35mm compacts that lack a remote release option.
