Question Studio flash.

Hi

I'm new to film, having started with digital ( so apologies for sounding a bit thick.)

I'm looking for any recommendations for colour film ( and black and White ) for studio work. Iv noticed som films are marked as daylight and wondered if this is unsuited for using with flash ( or if I need to use a filter?)
Any advice appreciated.

Firstly, welcome to the forum. The light output from studio flash is normally balanced for use with ordinary daylight colour film and B&W film too.

Daylight film has a colour balance of 5500Kelvin and studio flash has the same colour temperature.

Tungsten film has a colour balance of 3200Kelvin and is designed for tungten lights.

You only need filters for colour temperature correction when you mix any of the above.

Will you be using colour neg or reversal film?

If your shooting models Kodak films are very neutral for skin tones, though it is always difficult to recommend films as this is an area that is often influenced by personal choice.

Hi and welcome to the forum, If you are using studio flash then any colour film will work, the flash is daylight balanced, just try something like the Portra films from Kodak, and try different films untill you find something you are happy with, I very rarely use colour, prefering B/W, and any B/W film will do, tend to use 400iso film as I like the extra stop but again, try different films untill you find one you are happy with,Richard

Porta is a good place to start. I use fujicolour superia 100 regularly good colour saturation. If I run short I pick up a hand full of what ever at the £ shop and have had some wonderfull pictures from it.

Kodak have recently introduced a new Portra 400 colour negative film, but I haven't tried it yet. It should be a very good choice for studio flash lit subjects.

If I was photographing professionally in a studio, I would use Portra 400 along with T-Max 400 without doubt. The new T-Max 400 is hardly grainier than the 100 film and I prefer it's tonality. Both films should produce excellent skin-tones with a medium-format camera.
