Jessops Sepia Toner
I have the chance of getting the above but the guy I am dealing with is away from home and might be unable to confirm 2 things for a few days before I ask him to send it to me.
Maybe someone here has had experience of the above kit or knows its contents. Is it a thiocarbimide toner and is it of the variable or fixed variety? I am fairly sure that all Jessops sepia kits were thiocarbimide variety but less sure of whether it is variable or not. Thanks Mike |

Not used it Mike but I'd be fairly certain it's a variable thiocarbamide type. I don't think you can buy the old rotten egg fixed tone version off the shelf ?? Easy to make up yourself though - as is the thiocarbamide version

Thanks Bill. If I like the look of Sepia and find myself getting into toning as more than a very occasional sortie then I might look at "home brew" methods.

Yes it is a thiocarbamide type, with a separate bleach. I used it quite a bit before I started mixing my own. It's a good, mid-brown tone.
The one tip I would give is to dilute the bleach at least twice the amount in the instructions (i.e 1+19 rather than 1+9) as it works very quickly. I got the best results by just bleaching until the highlights started to fade, then washing and toning it (with the toner at the recommended dilution). If that's not a strong enough colour for you re-bleach and re-tone. It will have the effect of protecting delicate highlights, as the bleach will not affect areas that are already fully toned. Have fun! Rob |

Thanks Rob. If it's a good mid-brown tone then it sounds as if it is a one tone sepia so it's non variable but mid-brown sounds fine. Good tips about the bleach dilution and the re-bleach and re-tone method of strenghtening the colour.

Mike I have also used this toner kit for some time untill is dissapeared from the shelves, It is a variable toner,I used to dilute the bleach 50ml to 1 litre, same with the toner, plus 50ml of the activator, that is about half of the recomemded dilution for all parts, and got a nice mid brown tone, and the diluted bleach/toner kept very well, I have re-used them after more than a month with no problems,Richard

Thanks Richard. Sounds as if it will meet all my requirements.
