Question Framing mounted and matted prints.

Does anybody here make their own picture frames, or know of a good book from which I can learn from to make my own?

I have a book called Picture framing techniques by Mark Lister. ISBN 085223 557 7 it is quite an old book so it's properly out of print. but shows how to make frames for many different types of picture.

How much of the work do you want to do?

Cutting an accurate mitre is quite difficult without decent equipment, joining can be done with clamps and a drill and pins but takes a lot of practice.

most framers will gladly make empty frames for you, then you can source glass and backs and assemble them yourself.

I agree with Ian I have made a small number of frames for myself. It is the cutting of the miitre. they need to be perfect. when they are you can glue them together which is what I did or you can get special corner jointing pins. In each case a jig will be needed.

I am still undecided. This site has some interested frames, but I am not sure which one's to choose for B&W prints to be exhibited?

12"x 16" frames would be ideal, but I can only see the nearest metric size.

Keith, I am in a similar position to you. I have several 20x16 colour prints to frame plus black and white prints. What size are your prints on their own? For 12x16 prints I would add a 2 inch mount, I like cream or off white for BW. Then use a plain black frame about 1 inch or wider.

I was on a bike ride in Nottingham on Sunday. We called in "Greggs" in West Bridgford and they had several framed BW prints hanging up. I was so impressed I photographed some of them. If you send me your email I will forward them on.

Jeff, I am considering printing 35mm B&W negatives to 5"x 8" onto 8"x 10" papers and 120 B&W negatives to 8"x 11" on 9.5"x 12" papers. A frame size of 11"x 14" would be ideal for both print sizes. (12"x 16" is more a more common size in the UK.)

I wish the Nielson frames were available in imperial measurements instead of just metric.

I like prints mounted with a white window mat and frames with a black edge if that helps.

On second thoughts, a 6"x 9" image size on 8"x 10 paper for both film formats will keep it simple if only I can get hold of 11"x 14" print frames.
