Compact Camera Choice...
The discussion around the Rollei 35 has got me interested in buying a new compact camera. I currently use an Olympus XA but I am looking for new one along the lines of a Minox, Rollei and any other suggestions members may have.
Thanks. |

I have all five of the XA series and they are well used. I also have all the Ricoh GR1 series with the GR1v probably the best.

I had a Olympus 35RC which I really liked.

Like Tony, I too have an Olympus 35RC and although it is long in the tooth works well on the occasions I now use it, which is not often.

It's probably a bit modern and automated than what you're after, but one of the best cameras I own is a Canon Sureshot Supreme which I picked up at a charity shop for about £3.
If it wasn't for the noisy auto-wind, the annoying flash disable button and its relative bulkiness I'd probably use it a lot more than my XA. The 38mm f2.8 lens is superb and the auto-focus lightning fast. It must have been top of the range when it came out so it's a real bargain now, far better than the much sought-after Mju II in my opinion. |

I have a Mju II 115 and find it too light to hold steady. I have had good results from a Rollei B35, although you have to guesstimate distances. I have recently picked up a Leica C-1 which is a dual lens compact. I haven't tried it yet, but the lens looks good. I think the body, etc is Minolta. I've heard good things about the later Rollei compacts, like the Prego, etc. I'm in the lookout for them in charity shops!

I had a Mju II which I couldn't get on with and passed on. I have Mju Zoom which I like but never use so am selling. The XA series were my favourite pocket cameras.

The Contax T range is supposed to be very good, as is the Minox 35. Both good cameras that can easily fit in a pocket, but with outstanding lenses.

If you can run to a Ricoh Gr1 they are very compact with a knockout lens.

It would be interesting to know what you think is lacking in the XA, making you want to change ... rangefinder focusing, good lens, aperture priority exposure, backlighting override, very compact ... I have a few other compacts (Oly Trip, Oly PEN EE3, Oly Mju I, Oly 35ERC, Konica C35) but none of them have the same feature set that my two XAs have.
