My wife even enjoyed it, and normally I only have to say "camera" or "photography" and I hear snoring! Not sure if she is trying to tell me something?

Much as I remember, some interesting work and pictures shown but for some reason, I found the whole thing a bit dull. Just me? Terry S |

Out of the 4 progs on BBC4 last night I have seen all except the David Bailey/Jean Shrimpton docu-drama and felt all 3 are worth watching on the iPlayer
The street photographer was quite a character, doing his study on "Harrodsburg" in London. He made Gary Winogrand look shy and retiring but he had a way about him worked on the street. The second dealt with the changing face of British snaps and family albums. Again some interesting characters and how much family history some people have in albums. It may just be me but I got a little concerned with how much showing everything about his family's private life was of so little concern, especially to one oldish gent who had been a film camera user. The best of the 3 was about photographers that the BBC had run programmes about. It surprised me that some of those full length programmes that are now historical have not been revived - maybe and hopefully that is to come. There clearly is a wealth of stuff in the BBC programme vaults Mike |

Are you thinking of the 1980s series by Peter Adam that featured Kertesz, Brandt and Eisenstadt?

Nick, all or nearly all of those progs in the 80s and earlier would have been below my radar then but I just got the impression from the prog on "Photographers at the BBC" that there is a wealth of material.

I remember seeing the Kertesz, Mapplethorpe, Adams and McCullin programmes at the time, though I think that there was a South Bank Show on Mapplethorpe as well.

There seemed to be some analogue instruction programmes as well. I have no idea how old they might be. They may not even be up-to-date in terms of analogue which had probably moved quite a long way from when the programmes were produced even before the advent of digital. However I suppose that the BBC believe that with Utube and the lack of analogue users there may be little point in resurrecting those instructional programmes.
I can just about remember a programme featuring a man called Baron about 1954/5 who gave talks. It was a live( they all were then)late-night filler requiring one camera only and very little studio space. Lasted about 15 mins. I probably should have been in bed Mike |

I watched the last of the Britain In Focus programmes last night and thought the series as a whole was interesting for Joe Public and photographers alike.
Some things were not covered as much as they might have been. I had expected more to have been said about the big press cameras and the transition to MF and 35mm. I was waiting to hear more from Eammon McCabe about his reservations about digital but if he specified what they were then I missed that part. He mentioned the 1960s heavily saturated Hinde colour postcards but again it was covered rather superficially. I got the impression that there was a special process devised to give that look but other than it was LF Ektachrome I cannot find anything more about it. Not every photographer can front a TV programme about photography successfully but I felt he did a very good job. Mike |
